The Lenço dos Namorados, also known as Branded or Love Handkerchiefs, are, according to the Minhota tradition, embroidered with linen or cotton with cheerful motifs such as flowers, birds and hearts, among others. Containing love blocks written in rudimentary Portuguese, with misspellings, were proof of the low level of education of the artisans of that time. It is believed that they originated in the 17th and 18th century manor handkerchiefs, and were altered by the married girls in order to win their love. The Lenços dos Namorados are born as well as an artistic and poetic form used by the girls of Minho, in their genuine conquests.
